Die Apokalypse entfaltete in der lateinischen Spätantike und im lateinischen Mittelalter große Wirkung. Aber wie war sie zu verstehen? Die größte Ausstrahlung unter den spätantiken Kommentaren hatte der des Tyconius (2. Hälfte des 4. Jh.). Er deutete die Apk als Buch der Kirche und des Heiligen Geistes.

Danach gab es nur noch eine bedeutende, von Tyconius unabhängige, Auslegung der Apk, die des Apringius von Beja (Portugal, 6. Jh.). Allerdings ist dieser Text nur fragmentarisch erhalten.

A. und E. von Blumenthal übersetzen diese beiden Kommentare erstmals ins Deutsche und erschließen so ein faszinierendes Panorama lateinischer Bibelauslegung.
